A Valencia woman was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and cruelty to a child likely produce grievous bodily injury or death in connection with a crash near Granary Square Friday night that sent a man to hospital and took out a tree on McBean Parkway.
About 8:15 p.m. Friday, a dark-colored sedan hit a tree in the center median, just west of Arroyo Park Drive, knocking it over and pulling it out of the ground. The car sustained severe front-end damage in the crash, which triggered airbags in the vehicle.
Jessica Martin, 35, of Valencia, was arrested about 9:30 p.m. Friday.
The crash happened about 300 feet from her residence — a distance of about one football field.
“She was arrested on a DUI charge, a felony,” Shirley Miller, spokeswoman for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff Station, said Monday.
“She was also arrested on child endangerment for having an 8-year-old in the car,” she said.
On the night of the crash, a woman, identified by deputies as the driver, sat on the north curb of McBean with a girl identified as her 8-year-old daughter.
“The girl suffered bumps and bruises,” Miller said.
A man who was identified by deputies at the scene Friday as also being a passenger in the same car was hurt and taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, a block from the crash.
Paramedics with the Fire Department treated the man for head injuries, then placed him on a stretcher and into an ambulance.
“This was a three-vehicle traffic collision,” said Supervisor Imy McBride with the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
Deputies interviewed the driver, who sat huddled for a while under a blanket with her 8-year-old daughter on the grass by the sidewalk.
Deputies on the scene were investigating a report that her car allegedly hit the tree, and then spun out and hit two other vehicles.
