A woman was confirmed dead and three others were transferred to nearby hospitals after a Castaic Tow truck collided with a Nissan on the northbound side of Highway 14 in Newhall Sunday evening.
The person who died was identified as a 48-year-old woman from Lancaster, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner and a California Highway Patrol news release. The name of the victim was not released pending notification of next of kin.
The crash took place shortly after 6:30 p.m., according to Martin Rangel, supervising dispatcher with the L.A. County Fire Department, and units were on the scene by 6:44 p.m.
“It was named the ‘Newhall incident,’” he added.
The tow truck was driving behind the Nissan in the No. 5 lane, but for an unknown reason the truck collided with the rear of the car, according to a CHP press release.
An air squad was dispatched to the scene, Rangel said, but was canceled as the passengers who sustained injuries were transported to a local hospital via ambulance.
CHP issued a two-hour SIG alert for both sides of Highway 14 at Newhall Avenue. Only the HOV and No. 1 lanes were open Sunday evening, according to Officer Elizabeth Kravig.
Neither alcohol nor drugs are suspected to be a factor in this collision, according to the CHP news release.
