A teenager was identified as the person killed in a fatal collision on Thursday afternoon in Canyon Country, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner.

Sinai Barraza, 18, of Santa Clarita was identified as the driver of a Toyota sedan involved in a fatal crash that occurred at approximately 3:33 p.m. on the 17000 block of West Sierra Highway.

Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies were dispatched to the scene and found a two-vehicle collision involving Barraza’s vehicle and an air-conditioning van, Detective Charlie Upchurch, who is handling the investigation, said in a followup phone call with The Signal on Friday afternoon.

The air-conditioning van was traveling northbound on Sierra Highway, and Barraza’s vehicle was traveling southbound, Upchurch said.

For unknown reasons, which are still under investigation, Barraza’s car crossed over onto the northbound lanes, which caused the air-conditioning vehicle to hit her head-on, he said. She was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was pronounced dead on arrival, Upchurch added.

The man driving the air-conditioning van was transported to the hospital with unknown injuries, but his condition was stable, Upchurch added.

As of the publication of this story, there are no indications of driving under the influence involving drugs or alcohol from either party, Upchurch said, and the collision has been ruled an accident.
