Cause of death announced in off-duty officer crash

The Medical Examiner’s Office released the cause of death in the crash Saturday that killed a Los Angeles Police Department Officer. 

Officer Bailey Magana died around 2 a.m. after the car he was driving crashed into a utility pole and caught fire in Saugus, according to first responders, who reported that Magana had died at the scene. 

Deputy Medical Examiner Dr. Raffi Djabourian published the cause of death as blunt trauma, thermal injuries and inhalation of products of combustion. 

“Deputies responded to the intersection of Cinema Drive and Bouquet Canyon Road in Saugus regarding an unconscious person trapped inside a vehicle,” according to an email Monday from Capt. Brandon Barclay of the SCV Sheriff’s Station. “The caller reported a Tesla had crashed into a utility pole and was fully engulfed in flames.”  

The cause of the crash is under investigation by the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, which was not immediately available for comment Friday.
