Family Promise of Santa Clarita Valley is launching a campaign for families in need amid the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits being cut due to the federal government shutdown.

SCV Family Promise is a nonprofit organization that helps homeless families and also helps low-income families achieve sustainable independence through a community-based response, according to the organization’s website

The organization is asking for the community’s help this holiday season by donating money to those who are struggling financially.

“I want the community to know that local families are working (and) still struggling to afford food. And then with the holidays, of course, everything intensifies financial stress,” said Carmen Garcia, executive director of SCV Family Promise. “And parents shouldn’t have to choose between housing and a holiday meal, and we really are, you know, seeking the call to action to our community to please, in any way, anyone can help.”

The community’s donations will help provide a full Thanksgiving dinner and one night of safe shelter through a hotel voucher.

“We see the need, and the reason we put also a night of a hotel voucher, we are not, we don’t have discretionary funds to provide hotel vouchers for all of the requests we get,” Garcia said.
