A 7-year-old and a 9-year-old were killed in the fatal Thursday afternoon crash on Interstate 5 near Vista del Lago, said California Highway Patrol spokesperson Carlos Burgos-Lopez.
Burgos-Lopez said the CHP received a call at 2:56 p.m. about a multi-car crash in the northbound lanes south of Vista del Lago. CHP officers were also told two minors were getting CPR at the scene.
“Upon CHP personnel arriving, it was determined a gold Toyota Rav4 was stopped in the center median waiting with a family member,” Burgos-Lopez wrote in an emailed statement. “A blue Nissan Rogue, occupied by two adults and six minors, was traveling northbound I-5 south of Vista Del Lago Road and approaching the Toyota RAV4 when, for an unknown reason, the driver lost control.”
Three children were ejected, including a 7-year-old and a 9-year-old who died at the scene. The third child ejected from the car survived with major injuries not believed to be life-threatening, Burgos-Lopez said.
That child was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, along with another child who wasn’t ejected from the vehicle.
The father of the six children in the car, a 28-year-old man from Long Beach, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of felony child endangerment. He was booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station without incident.
There were four adults in the gold RAV4 when it was hit, but none were transported for treatment, Burgos-Lopez said.
