Offense was on display for the Castaic Coyotes in Monday night’s 80-8 home win over the Southwestern Academy Sun of San Marino as 13 players scored in the victory.

“Good game, good energy from the team and a lot of good execution tonight,” Castaic head coach Jared Dacey said. “We really filled the lanes and ran as a team today. Good team basketball, really shared the ball, so hopefully a good rhythm into a really tough matchup against Valencia.”

Of the 13 players who scored for the Coyotes (6-15, 0-9), three scored in the double figures with freshman standout Charlotte Wheeler leading the team with 18 points.

Wheeler, who’s averaging a double double with 10.9 points per game and 10.2 rebounds per game according to MaxPreps, was a player Dacey relied on all night as she had an all-around performance in the win.

The freshman guard finished with 10 rebounds, two steals and two blocks en route to her team-leading 18-point performance.

After the game, Dacey added that the athleticism from Wheeler is what allows her to have big nights on offense as well as be a big contributor on defense.

“She is an extreme athlete, so I’m trying to get her to translate that athleticism to on the court and basketball movements and to use it with aggression,” he said. “She’s naturally got a knack for the ball, getting rebounds, and putting up big numbers and for her to be averaging a double double as a freshman, she’s a huge impact and, you know, central focus for our team.”

As for the rest of the offense, junior Kahlia Tyndall finished the night second in scoring with 17 points along with three rebounds, two assists, and eight steals. Senior captain Harmony Winslow was third as she recorded 12 points.

With the big offensive night, Dacey added that he’s hoping the momentum from the win can be replicated onto the Foothill League season with everybody on the same page.

“Game plan coming in was share the ball, move the ball, and play as a unit, play as a team. And one of our goals today was to try and get as many people to score as possible,” he said. “So, they really took care of business, and it was really a lot of unselfish basketball.”

As the Coyotes look toward the rest of the Foothill League season, Dacey wants the success from the win over Southwestern to help finish the year strong and match their season goal of seven wins.

“I think we had an overarching goal as a team to not try to take any steps backwards,” he said. “We got seven wins last year, which was a big turnaround from the previous year. So, we at least wanted to meet and match that … we just want to show that we can come out and compete, come out and play with some effort from start to finish and really grow the program from year to year.”

The Coyotes play again today on the road against the Valencia Vikings with tip-off scheduled for 5 p.m.
