VFW post announces ‘Patriots Pen’ contest winner

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6885 in Canyon Country has selected Ava Hutton as the local winner of the nationally sponsored VFW “Patriots Pen Essay Contest” for middle school students.  

Hutton, 12, is a student at Oaks Christian School in Westlake. For her excellent work Ava was awarded a $250 check from VFW Post 6885 and she represented Post 6885 at the district-level competition, according to a news release from the post.  

“We are now excited to announce that Ava has now won the Patriots Pen Contest at the district level, which is comprised of 17 VFW Posts in the region,” the release said. “She is now moving on to compete in the state-level competition. The winner of the state competition will be announced later this month in Sacramento.” 

“I am so very proud of Ava and thrilled that she is having such a wonderful and meaningful live experience at such a young age. No doubt this is an accomplishment she will never forget,” VFW Post 6885 Commander Leon A. Walker said in the release. 

The VFW national organization sponsors the Voice of Democracy Essay Contest for high school students and the Patriots Pen Essay Contest for middle school students annually. Submissions are accepted commencing in October each year.
