After two years overseeing the Valencia boys’ basketball program, Greg Fontenette has stepped down as the head coach, and Bill Bedgood has been named the interim coach, according to Valencia High School Principal Kullen Welch.

“Coach Greg has been a valued member of the Valencia community for the past two years as head coach of our basketball program,” reads a statement sent to The Signal from Welch.“Under his leadership, the program has established a strong foundation for continued success, and we wish him the very best in his future endeavors.”

The statement later reads that Bedgood, who served as the head coach for Valencia for seven seasons from 2017 to 2024, will return to “ensure continuity and stability for our players,” according to Welch.

“Coach Bedgood, a former head coach, current teacher, and assistant within the program, is deeply familiar with Valencia Athletics and remains committed to supporting our student-athletes as we begin the process of determining the program’s long-term leadership,” reads the statement.

The move comes after Fontenette announced his resignation Thursday evening through a post on social media and cited his reasons for leaving “to pursue new opportunities.”

“After much reflection, I have decided it is time for me to pursue new opportunities that will allow me to continue growing and elevating my coaching career,” according to a statement posted on social media from Fontenette. “This decision was not made lightly, but I am excited for what lies ahead. The time I have spent at Valencia High School will forever be one of the most meaningful chapters of my life.

This past season, Fontenette led the Vikings to the second round of the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section playoffs following a second-place finish in the Foothill League with a 9-3 record in the regular season.

In the 2024-25 season, Fontenette’s first-year as head coach, all three levels of the Valencia boys’ basketball program won Foothill League titles, something that Fontenette said was “a special accomplishment.”

Fontenette took over as the head coach after Bedgood retired from coaching following the 2023-24 season.
