Following a series loss to the West Ranch Wildcats, the Canyon Cowboys bounced back on Monday with an 18-0 win over the visiting de Toledo Jaguars of West Hills and secured their seventh win of the season.
“We’ve played games where sometimes we have ups and downs. This was just a steady offensive success for us,” Canyon head coach Zach Newman said in response to the team’s success at the plate.
Although the Cowboys’ (7-8, 0-6) offense had a big day at the plate, it was right-hander William Peck that held the Jaguars scoreless.
Peck started the game for the Cowboys and struck out four Jaguars across four innings of work.
After the game, Newman said that Peck was consistent on the mound and was proud of what he did at the plate too.
Peck ended the day 2-for-3 at the plate and drove in three runs off a triple to the right field gap during the third inning.
“He showed up today, he’s one of our seniors and he’s been a consist pitcher for us, and he shoved a little bit today,” Newman said. “He got on the fastballs and got a little pop on it, and he showed up with his bat, too.”
In the fifth inning, sophomore right-hander Travis Reeves relieved Peck and recorded a 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts to close the game out for the win as the Cowboys held a more than 10-run lead after the fifth for the mercy.
Newman said Reeves is only a sophomore but showed his composure on the mound during the fifth inning, and he is excited to see what type of pitcher he can grow later into his high school career.
“He’s just super reliable. I know that we were giving up some free bases earlier in the game, and we just wanted to make sure we’re just pounding the strike zone,” he said. “Travis Reeves is always solid for that, and he’s got a wicked curveball.”
At the plate, Canyon’s Ronin Turner also had a big day as he went 4-for-4 with three runs driven in and a triple in the third inning.
With the win, the Cowboys are 7-8 in the season and with a bounce back victory following a series loss to West Ranch, Newman is looking forward to building upon the momentum and growing as the season continues.
“We show up to practice. We show up to games every single day and we got games scattered throughout these next couple of weeks,” Newman said. “We’re trying to prove to this valley that we’re not the Canyon of the past and we’re here to work and be a good ball club and excited to finish off league.”
The Cowboys play again on Saturday at home with a matchup against the visiting Lancaster Eagles with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m.
