Approximately 400 goats grazed through roughly 50 acres of brush at the Rivendale Open Space near Towsley Canyon Park over the course of mid-March to mid-April.

Jared Anderson, communications specialist for the city of Santa Clarita, said the reason they do this during the springtime is because the brush has the time to grow during the wintertime.

“It’s because we’ve gotten a lot of rain during the winter. So, we’ve given the brush time to grow. And it’s just going to start getting hotter. The brush is going to die anyway. So, that’ll lead to higher prevention or higher likelihood of fire starting. So just trying to get the brush before it dries even more before the summer starts,” Anderson said.

This was the first year the city had a paid contact for goats and plans to use them once a year in different locations around the valley, he said in a follow-up email statement.
