Rain is expected to hit the Santa Clarita Valley once again this weekend, with the biggest downpour on Friday night into Saturday, according to an official with the National Weather Service.

NWS meteorologist Devin Black said residents will begin to see the first system of rain on Friday and Saturday, before the skies clear up again. The rain is expected to return on Sunday.

“The first system has the greatest chance for thunderstorms, anywhere around a 20% chance,” Black said. “In terms of amounts, we’re expecting anywhere around an inch for the Santa Clarita Valley.”

With the two systems headed toward the valley, winds with gusts of 20 to 30 mph are also expected to travel out of the southwest direction. Gusts as strong as 50 mph are expected for the higher adjacent mountainssuch as the San Gabriels, Black added.

The spotty rainy weather isn’t unusual for the spring season, and the potential for wildfires remains low due to the wet conditions, Black added.

For Friday, temperatures are expected to be around the 70s before it becomes a bit cooler on Saturday, reaching the mid 60s, according to Black. Sunday will be the coolest, reaching temperatures in the low 60s before it begins to warm up again on Monday.

At the highest peaks of the valley’s neighboring mountains, residents may be able to see some light accumulation of snow, and a chance for more rain at the end of next week could be possible.

The forecasts for the remainder of the week are as follows:

  • Thursday: Partly cloudy in the morning then mostly cloudy. Highs in the mid to upper 70s. Southwest winds 15 to 25 mph in the afternoon.
  • Thursday night: Partly cloudy. Lows in the upper 40s to mid 50s. Southwest winds 10 to 20 mph in the evening.
  • Friday: Partly cloudy. Highs around 70. South winds 15 to 25 mph in the afternoon.
  • Friday night: Mostly cloudy with a 40% chance of rain. Lows around 50.
  • Saturday: Mostly cloudy with a chance of rain in the morning, becoming partly cloudy with a slight chance of rain in the afternoon. Highs in the lower to mid 60s. Chance of precipitation 30%.
  • Saturday night: Partly cloudy in the evening then mostly cloudy. A 50% chance of rain. Lows in the mid to upper 40s.
