Rep. George Whitesides, D-Agua Dulce, recently participated in the annual Congressional Hockey Challenge, which pits federal lawmakers and congressional staff from across the political spectrum against lobbyists representing a broad array of interests, according to a news release from the congressman’s office.
Whitesides wore a Santa Clarita Lady Flyers jersey during the game to honor the local team after tragedy struck in January: While on the way to the Western Girls Hockey League Playoffs tournament, a snowplow collided head-on with one of their team vans, injuring five players and killing Manny Lorenzana, the father of one of the players.
The Lady Flyers 12-and-under team went on to win the championship.
The Congressional Hockey Challenge has been running since 2009 and raises money for charity each year. The proceeds go to charities that expand the accessibility of ice hockey, allowing for more people to enjoy the sport, the release said. Since its inception, the game has raised over $1 million for hockey charities across the country.
