The Big Sandwich Theatre Company’s production of the comedy “Change the Station” was set to open in September at The Main Theatre in Old Town Newhall. After a three‑alarm fire destroyed the venue, the show had no place to perform. The Canyon Theatre Guild, whose own theater sits in the same block, survived the fire intact.
And now, “Change the Station” is changing performing venues so the show can, indeed, go on.
“Everyone here at the CTG is devastated by the loss of our sister theater, The Main,” CTG Executive Artistic Director Tim Ben Boydston said in a news release. “We wanted to do what we could to help in this tragedy, so we offered to host the Big Sandwich Theatre Company if they could adjust their opening dates slightly. We are thrilled that they will be able to perform their hysterical comedy on Oct. 2, 3 and 4.”
Boydston added: “In addition, in conversations with the author and director Wade Bradford, we agreed that we both wanted to help the theater community with their losses. Twenty-five percent of all ticket sales will be donated to the Santa Clarita Shakespeare Company to help cover the cost of the equipment lost in the fire.”
“Change the Station” is a madcap comedy about the glory days of radio broadcasts.
It’s the 1930s, the glory days of radio. Radio dramas are thriving. Well, everywhere except Portland’s local station KOD. This run-down station is struggling to stay on the air. It’s up to Agnes, the station’s all-purpose secretary, assistant and copywriter, to try to hold everything together and get KOD back on top. But she’ll only help rein in this cast of crazy radio stars if her boss Fred promises to make her an equal partner.
Madcap comedy ensues with a wild and raucous “on-air” finale. Will the new show be a success?
“Change the Station” runs the first weekend of October, showing 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, and 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4.
Ticket prices are $20 for adults, $18 for seniors (62 and up), and $15 for students.
