CHP: Big rig fully engulfed on I-5

A big rig was fully engulfed in flames on northbound Interstate 5 at Roxford Street in Sylmar on Monday evening, according to officials with the California Highway Patrol Newhall-area Office. 

Officers received the call around 7:55 p.m. of the tractor-trailer catching fire as the driver exited the freeway, according to an email statement from Officer Carlos Burgos-Lopez, spokesman for the CHP Newhall-area Office. 

The driver came to a stop on the right shoulder at Roxford Street as the tractor-trailer became fully engulfed in fire. Officers closed the northbound I-5 exit to Roxford Street along with the No. 5 lane in that location, the statement said.

Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel arrived on the scene and were able to extinguish the fire. The tractor-trailer, which was carrying produce, was completely burned due to the fire and was towed from the scene, the statement said.  

No injuries were reported due to this incident, according to Burgos-Lopez’s statement.
