News release
The Santa Clarita Valley Groundwater Sustainability Agency invites SCV Water Agency customers and other interested parties to review its Draft Periodic Evaluation for the Groundwater Sustainability Plan, which is now available for public review, the agency announced in a news release.
The Periodic Evaluation provides an update on groundwater conditions and GSP implementation and incorporates new monitoring, technical studies, and information collected since the GSP was prepared. The proposed Periodic Evaluation can be accessed online at scvgsa.org/gsp/periodic-evaluation.
The GSP provides a long-term framework for sustainably managing groundwater in the Santa Clara River Valley East Subbasin. The SCV-GSA board of directors adopted the GSP in January 2022, and the California Department of Water Resources approved it in January 2024.
The GSP describes groundwater conditions in the basin, establishes criteria for evaluating groundwater sustainability, identifies monitoring needs, and outlines projects and management actions intended to avoid undesirable groundwater conditions and achieve and maintain sustainability over the long term. Members of the public are invited to review the Draft Periodic Evaluation and provide public comment during the 45-day comment period running through Oct. 25.
Public input is part of the process of finalizing the Periodic Evaluation, which will be submitted to the California Department of Water Resources by Jan. 24. All comments received during the public comment period will be documented, reviewed by staff and the project team, and considered before the Periodic Evaluation is finalized and presented to the SCV-GSA Board of Directors.
The SCV-GSA, including SCV Water staff and project team members, is scheduled to hold a public workshop via Zoom on Thursday at 6 p.m. to review the proposed Periodic Evaluation with attendees. This is an opportunity for those interested in the plan to understand each of its components and ask questions of SCV Water staff and the project team. The Zoom link can be found at tinyurl.com/yc8epp88.
The public comment period leads to a public hearing before the SCV-GSA Board of Directors. On Monday, Dec. 7 at 1 p.m., the board will hold a special meeting to review the proposed Periodic Evaluation and take public comment.
The public can attend this hearing at the SCV Water Administration Building (27234 Bouquet Canyon Road, Santa Clarita) or participate virtually via Zoom. The board is then scheduled to consider the final Periodic Evaluation for adoption on Monday, Dec. 21, at 1 p.m.
Those interested in reviewing the proposed Periodic Evaluation can do so by visiting scvgsa.org/gsp/periodic-evaluation. Public comment on the document can be made by sending an email to [email protected].
A printed copy of the proposed Periodic Evaluation will be made available upon request to SCV Water Communications Manager Kevin Strauss at [email protected] or 661-513-1265. Information on the Dec. 7 Public Hearing will be posted to scvgsa.org prior to the meeting date.
