Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Hope Levy is scheduled to play a free live performance at Barnes & Noble Valencia at Creekside Place on Saturday, Sept. 26 at 5 p.m.
The event also includes an album signing celebrating her tribute album, “Hope Levy Sings Connie Converse!” recently reissued by New Folk Records.
During the event, Levy will perform selections from the album and introduce audiences to the songs and story of Elizabeth Eaton “Connie” Converse, “a pioneering singer-songwriter who was writing strikingly personal, sophisticated songs in 1950s New York — years before the singer-songwriter movement and folk revival of the 1960s,” said a news release from Levy.
“Although largely unknown during her lifetime, Converse left behind a remarkable collection of recordings that would eventually be rediscovered decades later,” the release said.
In 1974, at the age of 50, Converse packed her belongings into her Volkswagen Beetle, drove away from her family and friends and was never seen again. Her disappearance remains a mystery, while her music has continued to find new generations of listeners.
Levy’s connection to folk music began in Marin County. As a child, she recorded on an album with legendary folk singer-songwriter Malvina Reynolds and also recorded a song for a 45-record written by Marla Hunt of the pioneering all-female rock band Ace of Cups, the release said.
Her career has since spanned music, theater and voice acting, including performing in the West Coast premiere of “Les Misérables” and providing voice and vocal work for productions including “Shrek,” “Avatar,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “The Boss Baby” and “Resident Evil.”
