Nick Reed and Johnny Huerta were just hanging out in Reed’s family home watching a movie when Reed wanted to grab some fresh air in his front yard in Saugus on Saturday night.
Huerta followed, and Reed said he had heard a faint alarm, and walked around to check where it was coming from and then saw a glow coming from his neighbor’s front window, prompting him and Huerta to go over.
Around 9 p.m., both men saw the flames and immediately reacted.
“I saw the glow on their lawn from the fire in the living room. So yeah, I jumped to get the hose and pass that to Johnny, and he took that over there and started watering it down and I went in and called 911,” Reed said. “Yeah, they (Los Angeles County Fire Department) just pretty much told me to keep an eye on the backyard because we’re up against the hill here. So, they wanted to make sure that it wasn’t spreading back there. But yeah, I think, I think we got it within maybe a minute or two of it starting, thankfully.”
Reed said by the time firefighters arrived, it was mostly out.
Huerta said he felt terrible for his neighbor’s family but was glad he and Reed were there to help them in the best way they could.
Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel were called to the 27400 block of Annette Jo Circle around 9:02 p.m., arriving a few minutes later, according to Howard Tieu, spokesman for the Fire Department.
The fire was knocked down at 9:15 p.m., Tieu said.
