Deputy injured after being struck by patrol unit during investigation

Street racing may have been a factor in a fatal solo vehicle crash that occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning along Railroad Avenue and claimed the life of a man, according to officials.

The solo vehicle crash was reported at approximately 3:30 a.m. near the intersection of Railroad Avenue and Oak Ridge Drive, according to Shirley Miller, a spokeswoman for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

According to preliminary information per witness accounts that are under active investigation, a black vehicle may have lost control after it was possibly racing with another vehicle and collided with a tree, Miller stated.

The driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was identified as a man and was declared deceased at the scene.

The other vehicle involved in the alleged street racing was not at the scene of the crash, and officials were working to gather additional information to identify potential leads, Miller added.

While first responders worked to contain the scene, one deputy sustained minor injuries and was transported to the hospital after a deputy in a patrol unit struck him.

The deputy injured was stopping traffic when another responding unit, who was traveling at a low rate of speed, struck him, Miller said. The injured deputy was transported to the hospital and has since been released.

Railroad Avenue remained closed Saturday afternoon from Magic Mountain Parkway while officials continued their investigation.
