The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station is investigating an apparent noninjury shooting that happened at a Newhall park Thursday night.
Deputies were called to Creekview Park around 8 p.m. Thursday, regarding a report of shots fired in the area. This is the second shooting at the park in the past year, based on L.A. County Sheriff’s Department records.
“The call was for gunshots coming from Creekview Park on 22200 Park St., Newhall,” said Shirley Miller, spokeswoman for the SCV Sheriff’s Station, “and they reportedly saw a male adult running from the area.”
Miller said deputies responded, and they were unable to locate any suspect or injured parties.
“The deputies did recover shell casings from the scene. A report was taken,” Miller said. “It’s under investigation by the (Juvenile and Gangs) Team.”
Violent crime this year in the SCV is back on the decline, after the first six months brought a double-digit increase over the same time period the last year.
In July, the Sheriff’s Department reported that property crimes reported to the SCV station had declined by 8%, while the number of violent crimes had increased by 18%.
The latest numbers the Sheriff’s Department released in September indicate now that the number of violent crimes is only up 2% from January to August, compared to the same time last year. There were 311 so far, or six more incidents. Property crimes are now down 10%.
The previous shooting at Creekview Park is believed to have involved a gang rivalry, based on investigative records. A suspect has been identified in the last shooting, which happened in November, but no charges were filed.
