High winds and fire danger have triggered public safety power shutoffs by Southern California Edison, some of which are in the Santa Clarita Valley.

SoCal Edison issued updated warnings about public safety power shutoffs Thursday, informing some customers that “it’s likely we will shut off your power in the next four hours due to wind-driven fire conditions,” a day after alerting customers of the possibility.

According to the SCE’s outage map, 40,531 customers have been affected by the power shutoff as of Thursday afternoon, while 230,065 are still under consideration for power shutoffs.

Local areas impacted by shutoffs as of Thursday afternoon include: parts of Canyon Country along Soledad Canyon Road; portions of Bouquet Canyon north of Plum Canyon; some areas along Golden Valley Road; State Route 126 at Commerce Center Drive; the area around the intersection of Copper Hill Drive and Rio Norte Drive; and Castaic Junction.

L.A. County Supervisor Kathryn Barger, who represents the SCV, advises residents to prepare for fire outbreaks and/or power shutoffs due to strong winds, low humidity, and warm temperatures that could contribute to rapid fire spread.

“Strong winds can cause fires to spread quickly, leaving little time to react. Have your emergency supplies ready, keep your devices charged, and be prepared to evacuate if necessary,” Barger said in a news release. “We know how quickly these conditions can turn dangerous, and we know that preparation saves lives. I urge every household to treat this warning as a call to act today.”
