A new film by his son, Justin Schein, reveals a far more personal story — his father’s lifelong battle with the U.S. tax system. In “Death & Taxes,” audiences meet Harvey Schein in retirement, meticulously guarding his wealth and searching for ways to protect his estate from the IRS. Schein grew up in depression-era Brooklyn and inherited little when his parents passed. Determined to leave a legacy and ensure that his wealth would provide for future generations, his fixation with living frugally and avoiding taxes caused heartache while he lived.
