SCOPE Honors 20th Anniversary of ‘Old Glory’
March 18, 2023 @ 1:00 pm
Twenty years ago, people in the Santa Clarita Valley came together to save a heritage oak from being destroyed to make way for new development. The tree, named “Old Glory” by two local boys, was in danger of being destroyed until activist John Quigley agreed to climb into its limbs. This 71-day tree-sit action brought about a negotiation that resulted in the tree being moved to Pico Canyon Park. Santa Clarita Organization for Planning and the Environment, a local environmental activist organization, is inviting the community to a celebration of the 20th anniversary. Residents are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch and camp chair. Parking is limited, so visitors are encouraged to carpool.
