Hart High defeated the Saugus Centurions, 3-1, Tuesday night in a tightly contested match at Saugus High School. The win gives Hart a 10-5 overall record and a 2-2 record in the Foothill League.
Game scores were 21-25, 25-17, 25-22, and 26-24.
The Centurions began the night with a game one victory, never trailing the Indians on their way to the 25-21 win. Saugus lead 10-5 in the second game, but allowed Hart to tie the score, 13-13. From there, the Indians went on a 12-4 run and took game two 25-17.
“We’re very consistent at being inconsistent,” Saugus captain Caitlin Liebe said. “We won the first game, but the second game was a blowout.”
Hart jumped out to an 18-5 lead in the third frame. The Centurions went on a 17-7 run to keep it close, but their comeback fell short as Hart won 25-22.
Saugus started game four in control, gaining a 20-13 lead and looking to force a game five Thanks to the efforts of Zoe DiNardo and Ashley Cosey, who both had 13 kills for the match, Hart clawed its way back to win the fourth frame 26-24, and the match 3-1 on the road.
“I feel like our hitting stayed consistent as a team, and most of the time it worked out in our favor” Cosey said.
Madi Fay added 44 assists to the Indians’ effort which, despite ending in victory, left much to be desired for coach Mary Irilian.
“I’m glad that we won, but at the end of the day this was not our best performance,” Irilian said. “We were making critical errors across the board. So a win’s a win, but it wasn’t pretty today.”
Saugus was led by Liebe’s 14 kills, Gabby Scheisser’s 32 assists, and Madison Guardado’s five service aces, as the Centurions fell to 11-11 on the season, and 2-2 in the Foothill League. The Centurions will look to rebound when they take on the league-leading West Ranch Wildcats Thursday night at West Ranch.
Hart has the opportunity to obtain a winning Foothill League record when they face the Golden Valley Grizzlies Thursday night at Golden Valley High School.
