The West Ranch Wildcats used a late touchdown run from quarterback Wyatt Eget to cap off a wild homecoming night, defeating Oxnard High 21-17 on the last play from scrimmage.

With 10 seconds remaining on the clock and his team down 17-14, Eget capped off a 78-yard game-winning drive with a 3-yard touchdown on the final play, crossing the pylon on a designed run to the right side.

“I was just thinking that I am getting into that end zone no matter what,” said Eget, whose team is 3-2. “That guy isn’t going to stop me.”

Eget also threw for an 11-yard touchdown in the first quarter to Jovan Camacho. The other West Ranch score came on a 41-yard run right up the middle from Jake Rice.

Oxnard (2-3) saw both of its touchdowns come from a connection that was working all night, as its quarterback Alex Duran hooked up with his favorite target Alex Sarti Jr. for scores of 36 and 40 yards. Oxnard kicker Rafael Vargas contributed with a go-ahead field goal with 2:30 remaining in the contest, making it 17-14 Oxnard, but it wasn’t enough to secure the victory.

“We needed this momentum going into league,” said West Ranch coach Chris Varner. “Nobody thinks we have any chance, and I need the kids to believe that we do. Tonight shows that.”

The next game for West Ranch is a date with Canyon high school on Oct. 7, with that game being played at Canyon. Oxnard will look to rebound when they host Crenshaw next week.
