Saugus High bounced back from its first loss of the season with one of its best offensive performances in a 44-20 win against Canyon at College of the Canyons on Friday.

Quarterback Nathan Eldridge threw for 251 yards and four touchdown on 14-of-20 passing for the Cents (8-1 overall, 3-1 in league). Tight end Daniel Gilmartin caught three touchdown with 86 yards receiving, while Gary Bojorquez added two more on the ground.

Brian Devereaux led the Cowboys with 18 rushes for 133 yards.

Canyon (4-5, 0-4) took an early lead on a 4-yard run from Brandon Wilson. Saugus answered quickly with Bojorquez scoring on a run from the 5-yard line. The score was tied at 6-6 with both teams failing to convert the extra point.

The Cents started to pull away with a couple of big passing plays, aided by Canyon missing tackles. Receiver Jared Pane fought off a defender and stumbled across the goal line on a 33-yard touchdown pass with 8:20 left in the first half.

After a quick defensive stop for Saugus, Eldridge found Gilmartin, who overpowered several defenders on his way to a 50-yard touchdown.

Canyon quarterback Miles Fallin got one back just before halftime with a 4-yard keeper. Saugus led 20-13 at the break.

In the third quarter, Gilmartin caught two more touchdown passes – from 10 and 13 yards – as Saugus went up by three touchdowns.

Canyon closed the gap when Devereaux returned a partially blocked punt for a touchdown, but Saugus finished off the game with another Bojorquez touchdown run and a field goal.
