Recently, I had the distinct pleasure of meeting with city spokeswoman Gail Morgan at City Hall to discuss Santa Clarita’s outstanding Hometown Heroes Military Banner Program.

So far, families of 29 currently serving Santa Clarita Valley residents are participating, displaying their service member’s face and name proudly on a banner hung along one of Santa Clarita’s thoroughfares. Also participating are nine Gold Star Families, whose service members have given the ultimate sacrifice.

This patriotic program was one of Mayor Bob Kellar ’s very first objectives for 2016 after becoming mayor last year, and it was unanimously approved by his fellow City Council members.

Gail referred me to the city’s website link https://www.santa-clarita.com/city-hall/hometown-heroes-military-banner-honorees that displays the military banners purchased so far and the discounted cost of $325.15.

Gail and our city leaders are most anxious to see many more banners installed. Community contributions have secured over $10,000 to support those families who cannot afford to purchase the banners themselves.

Families applying for banners whose loved ones are currently serving must simply have some connection to the Santa Clarita Valley to secure a banner. Proof of service is required.

Gail informed me that no funds for this program go to the city coffers; all purchase money goes to Triple A Flag and Banner Manufacturing, which provides our banners and installs them three times annually.

Typically, they’re on display during Memorial Day through Flag Day June 14, and on Independence Day and Veterans Day.

Please do not hesitate to take advantage of this terrific opportunity to proudly display your loved one’s honorable service.

Bill Reynolds is a Valencia resident and Director of Veterans Affairs for The Signal.
