Trailing Trinity Classical Academy with less than five minutes left in the game, Albert Einstein Academy looked to goalkeeper-turned-forward Philip Stulman to make a big play.

Stulman rewarded coach Ken Erenberg’s decision to move him to the front with a goal that set the final score at 3-3 Tuesday afternoon at Tesoro Sports Park.

“I just wanted to score a goal,” said Stulman, who was replaced at goalie after he moved to forward. “It’s my job to score, so that’s what I did.”

The Knights (3-3-1) capped off a 3-0 scoring run late in the second half when Drew Black left Rockets defenders in his wake and found an open net waiting for a 3-2 Trinity lead. The score was Black’s second of the game, his first a header that ignited Trinity’s run.

Knights goalkeeper Peyton Frazier helped preserve the 3-2 advantage, stopping a shot by Rocket Samy Couja.

A breakdown in Trinity’s defense, however, allowed Stulman to snatch away the victory and gave Knights head coach Greg Hayes an area of growth for his team.

“We have to learn how to take that lead home,” Hayes said. “We have to finish that game off with better defense and better intensity to match their level.”

Couja put the pressure on Trinity early, scoring his first goal in the opening minutes of the match. His second goal gave Albert Einstein (1-1-2) a 2-0 lead.

While the hot start appeared to swing momentum in the Rockets’ favor, Erenberg saw it as the catalyst for the game’s final result.

“If kept playing after we had the two nothing lead, who knows what would’ve happened” Erenberg said. “We took the lead and sat. We watched the game.”

Down 2-1 to start the second half, Trinity began to turn the tables on the Rockets midway through the final frame when a Ben Wexler penalty kick knotted the score at 2-2.

Albert Einstein travels to St. Bonaventure High School in Ventura to face the Seraphs on Thursday.

Trinity plays host to the Pilgirm High School of Los Angeles on Friday.
