State housing inspectors following up on reports of a septic system that malfunctioned recently at a Newhall Mobile Home Park reported no indication of a spill or any other complication as a result of the failure.

A field inspector with the state’s Department of Housing and Community Development, which oversees the operation of California mobile home parks, inspected the Crescent Valley Mobile Home Park on The Old Road Friday morning.

Although the cause of the septic system failure was not disclosed, the park has been prone to mud flows since 2015 when the Calgrove Fire stripped nearby hills of vegetation that would normally have stabilized the soil.

“My field inspector just visited the park,” Evan Gerberding, spokesman for the Housing and Community Development told The Signal Friday morning.

“There are no sewer spills to speak of at the park,” he said.

The inspector took a look at an area where a proposed new sewer treatment plant will be constructed  in the area.

Officials issued a construction permit on Tuesday for a waste water collection treatment and  disposal system to replace the existing system which failed.

Mobile home park owners – Crescent Valley MHC LLC – were expected to pick the permit and approved plans from the HCD’s Southern Area Office on Friday, Gerberding said.

Planners with the Los Angeles County Department of Regional Planning approved an application submitted by park owners on Tuesday replace the failed septic system.

The owners needed the county’s permission since the repair plans are expected to encroach on 63 of the park’s oak trees.

They need a special oak tree permit to make the repairs close to the trees, Regional Planner Thuy Hua told The Signal Thursday, noting the county’s concern was for the protection of oak tree “root structure.”
