The Miss Santa Clarita Valley scholarship pageant crowned its queens and princesses during its 38th annual pageant at the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center March 11.

Highlighting community service and self-esteem, the scholarship pageant is said to focus on inner beauty rather than outer beauty.

“It’s about becoming the best version of yourself,” said Madi Summers, the new reigning Miss Santa Clarita Valley.  “Everything is all about you and not what you look like.  It’s about education and confidence more than looks.”

During the pageant, Summers shared her passion for empowering women and supporting equality.

“I talked a lot about how I consider myself to be a feminist,” she said.  “I focused on the empowerment of women and how I think that’s the most important thing we can fight for.”

As the reigning Miss Santa Clarita Valley, Summers will complete more than 300 hours of community service throughout the year and receive a $2,500 educational scholarship.

“The Miss Santa Clarita Valley winners tend to go around to places in SCV and we pretty much work for anybody,” Summers said of the program’s involvement with shelters, volunteer organizations and food drives.  “I hope we do reach out to the women’s shelter.”

As a make-up artist and prosthetic artist, Summers said she plans on using the scholarship funds to receive her hair certification and become a certified cosmetologist.

This is the second time Summers was crowned during the pageant.  She was also named Miss Teen Santa Clarita Valley in 2012.

She said she continues to participate in the program because of its focus on personal growth and community involvement.

“This is the only scholarship program that I think is great enough to donate as much time as I do to it,” Summers said.  “It is such an amazing program.”

During the pageant, officials also crowned Mini Miss Santa Clarita Valley,  Little Miss Santa Clarita Valley, Jr. Miss Santa Clarita Valley, Miss Teen Santa Clarita Valley, Ms. Santa Clarita Valley and Mrs. Santa Clarita Valley.
