California Highway Patrol officers arrested a man who was reportedly seen leaving the scene of a single-car crash after he drove into a utility pole Sunday night, according to a CHP official.
At 9:42 p.m. Sunday, Newhall-area officers received a 911 call regarding a crash on Sierra Highway, near Brighton Academy in the 13100 block.
“As units responded to the scene, they received updated information stating the driver of the vehicle was attempting to leave the scene,” according to an email Monday from Carlos Burgos-Lopez, spokesman for the CHP’s Newhall-area Office.
“Upon arrival on scene officers located a blue Honda Accord, which had crashed with a power pole. The damage to the power pole was substantial and compromised the power pole’s integrity,” he added.
The responding officers located the driver, who had suffered injuries during the crash, Burgos-Lopez said. Patrol officers took the suspect to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital for medical attention.
Officers responded to Henry Mayo as they continued their investigation, and ultimately arrested the driver on suspicion of misdemeanor DUI. He was cited and released into the hospital’s care.
Southern California Edison officials responded to the crash site, according to the CHP. There was no power outage listed as of Monday afternoon.
Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station officials said deputies provided assistance with traffic control at the scene of the crash.
