California Highway Patrol officers and the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Search and Rescue Team responded Wednesday night after a vehicle plunged approximately 100 feet over the side of Sand Canyon Road.

A 23-year-old woman driving a white Toyota Corolla reportedly left the road at 10:04 p.m., about 150 feet from the intersection with Placerita Canyon Road, according to witnesses.

The severity of the woman’s injuries was not immediately available, but Officer Carlos Burgos-Lopez, a spokesman for the Newhall-area CHP office, indicated the woman had contacted her mother-in-law prior to first responders’ arrival.

The driver was seen climbing out of her vehicle by the CHP officers who responded to the scene.

Members of the Search and Rescue Team responded Wednesday.

L.A. County Fire Department officials did not have a record of being called out to the incident, according to a spokesman for the media line.

Tony Buttitta, captain of the Search and Rescue Team, said the unit was deployed to make sure there were no additional injured parties in the crash.

Burgos-Lopez said the cause of the crash was still under investigation, but there was no arrest made and no criminal activity suspected at this time.

Anyone with more information about the incident can contact the CHP Newhall-area Office at 661-600-1600.
