A detective with the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau confirmed this week that no arrests have been made and no charges are expected to be filed in the fatal May 30 shooting outside the Santa Clarita Sports Complex.
Joshua Trujillo died May 30 at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital from multiple gunshot wounds, following a shooting just before 11 p.m.
Detectives investigated the circumstances of the shooting and presented their findings to the L.A. County District Attorney’s Office, which found there was “probable cause for self-defense” in the incident, according to Lt. Chris Oakley of the Homicide Bureau.
“In this case, we did not make an arrest,” Oakley said in a brief phone conversation Wednesday.
According to witness accounts from the night of the incident, the shooting happened at a private party at The Centre, a rentable event venue operated by the city of Santa Clarita.
SCV Sheriff’s Station officials received 911 calls regarding a shooting at the complex and found two men with gunshot wounds.
Both were taken to the hospital for treatment. The second person was listed in critical condition, but their outcome was unknown. There were no other injuries or deaths associated with the shooting, according to station officials.
Station officials locked down the scene for several hours during the course of their initial investigation, while partygoers were kept inside the building. Deputies reported recovering dozens of shell casings near where the victims were shot.
The decedent, Joshua Trujillo, was later identified as the son of a prominent San Fernando Valley pastor, Rudy Trujillo. The community created a GoFundMe effort online to support the family. The GoFundMe page reported that Joshua Trujillo was a father of four.
“It is with a broken heart that I share that we lost our dear friend and beloved community member, Joshua Trujillo, over the weekend. Josh was a pillar of our community since 2018, connecting with values for a faith rooted in social justice, inclusivity, theological exploration, and contemplative practice,” said Mission Hills Christian Church in a statement posted to its Facebook page.
After their initial investigation of the scene, Oakley said they suspected two men were involved in a fight when Trujillo, who was killed, used a firearm and shot the other man, who remained hospitalized as of Monday. A third person, who was originally uninvolved in the fight, shot and killed Trujillo.
