The driver of a Toyota Tacoma pickup was transported to the hospital Wednesday morning after suffering a medical emergency and striking two light poles in a Saugus residential neighborhood, according to first responders’ reports from the scene.

L.A. County Fire Department personnel arrived very shortly after the 9:02 a.m. collision, which occurred less than 500 feet away from Fire Station 108 on Rock Canyon Drive.

Initial radio dispatch reports indicated the driver, a 17-year-old girl, may have been trapped in the vehicle at the intersection of Rock Canyon and Bridger Court.

However, she was not physically trapped but first responders needed to exercise a great deal of care in helping her out of the truck because the second light pole it crashed into was leaning over the front end of the truck and may have been energized, according to Engineer Dante Johnson of the L.A. County Fire Department.

As a result, Johnson said, “I wanted to be very careful about pulling that door open to get her out.”

Once safely removed from the truck, she was able to walk under her own power and paramedics evaluated her at the scene before she was transported by ambulance to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital as a precaution, Johnson said.

Sheriff’s Deputy Curameng, who declined to provide his first name, said the collision was a “fairly low-speed crash” and that the driver was not expected to be cited, as the crash was the result of a medical situation.
