It was a two-year project in the making and students, families and community members, along with William S. Hart Union High School District officials, celebrated the grand opening of the newly renovated multipurpose room and kitchen at Sierra Vista Junior High School last week.
The approximately $13 million project included upgraded facilities that aimed to promote a safe and welcoming learning environment for students on campus, which included an expanded kitchen and new walk-in serving area, a student store with an ice cream shop, and a staff wellness room.
But that wasn’t all — it also included new and improved outdoor spaces with landscaping for students to have a place to get together and socialize during breaks on campus and a new mural for the Sierra Vista Junior High community to enjoy, bringing it up to standard with the other junior high schools in the district.
To celebrate the milestone, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held with Hart district officials and students right before back-to-school night on Aug. 25.
“All of you who have been on this team, you have built a structure here that’s going to last for a handful of generations from now and beyond,” former Sierra Junior High School Principal Marcus Garrett said, and thanked the team who brought the project to life.
Garrett was present during the groundbreaking held in March 2024 with former board members and former district Superintendent Mike Kuhlman.
For district governing board President Joe Messina, the ribbon cutting ceremony was more than just a celebration.
“It’s about celebrating our continued investment in our students, in our community that provide a safe, welcoming, and inspiring learning environment,” Messina said, before recognizing the students who make up the fold of the Sierra Vista community.
“Everything we do is set on creating opportunities for you. We hope these new spaces inspire you, support you, and serve you for many years to come,” he said.
The ribbon cutting ceremony was held in front of the school’s newest mural, right by the entrance of the multipurpose room, a place where future gatherings and celebrations will be held.
“We are all very excited that there’s something which was planned years ago, has finally been executed and it executed very well,” governing board member Aakash Ahuja said. “It’s been very well received by the community, and the students. That also gives us the further aim to aim higher, to make more such places when required.”
