A local kindergartener was recognized for her artwork in the 46th annual Los Angeles County Bookmark Contest last week by Supervisor Kathryn Barger.

Hosted by the L.A. County Library, the competition allows children in grades K-12 who live within the county to submit original bookmark designs inspired by reading, bookmarks and their own imagination, according to the L.A. County website.

Last week, Andy Wang from the Stevenson Ranch Library, was recognized by Barger at the Board of Supervisors meeting alongside 20 other children across the county, according to a news release.

Andy’s creativity and enthusiasm was praised by Barger, the release stated.

“Andy, your artwork is truly inspiring and a wonderful tribute to the power of reading and creativity,” Barger said in the release. “You remind us all that books can sparkle with imagination and fun.”

The release also added that Wang enjoys creating colorful designs inspired by her favorite stories and she believes that “books shine like diamonds,” the release stated.

More than 9,000 young artists submitted original designs for a chance to be made into bookmarks that will be distributed across all of L.A. County libraires, the release added. Winners were selected in multiple age categories, with each member of the Board of Supervisors choosing a standout submission from their district, according to the release.

The annual Bookmark Contest has been a tradition for over four decades and aims to encourage children to explore their creativity while fostering a lifelong love of reading.
