An 80-ton construction crane near the California Highway Patrol Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Facility, or truck scales, tipped over Monday night, knocking down a metal sign.

CHP officers were called to the scene at 10:42 p.m. over a report that a piece of construction equipment had damaged signs at the weigh station, said Carlos Burgos-Lopez, a spokesperson for CHP’s Newhall-area Office.

When officers arrived at the weigh station, bordering Interstate 5 just south of State Route 126, they found that a hydraulic crane had tipped over and taken out a metal sign at the facility.

The crane’s boom, or operating arm, may have caused it to tip over, Burgos-Lopez said.

“They had the boom fully extended, and it looks like they just went past the capacity, or … allotted range for the boom, which caused the weight to shift and tip over,” Burgos-Lopez said.
