A rideshare passenger was taken for a mental health hold by California Highway Patrol officers Tuesday night after he tried to walk across traffic lanes on State Route 14, according to the CHP.
Officer Andre Ortiz, spokesperson for the CHP Newhall-area Office, said in an emailed statement to The Signal that the driver had called the CHP while northbound on SR-14, south of Agua Dulce Canyon Road, around 9:30 p.m., reporting that a passenger in the car was trying to harm himself.
The driver stopped the car on the right shoulder, where the passenger left the car and started walking across the highway.
CHP officers shut down both sides of the freeway and detained the man at 10:20 p.m. He was taken to a local hospital “per 5150 Welfare and Institutions Code,” the statement said.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department was dispatched to the scene at 9:40 p.m. in response to a medical call and arrived at the scene in 16 minutes, said Edith Lai, a spokeswoman for the Fire Department.
The L.A. County Fire Department logs state that the person experiencing the medical emergency could have been intoxicated and was unruly with first responders, Lai said.
No other transports or injuries were reported, she added.
