Special Olympics Southern California is scheduled to host the Santa Clarita Spring Games on Saturday, May 16, at Hart High School in Newhall. The event will bring together athletes with intellectual disabilities from across the region for a full day of basketball and bocce competitions, celebrating athletic achievement, inclusion, and community support, the nonprofit organization announced in a news release.
The Opening Ceremony begins at 9 a.m. and anyone is welcome to attend to offer support to the athletes, after which Olympics-style basketball and bocce competitions will ensue. Athletes will compete in divisions based on age and ability, supported by coaches, families and volunteers.
“The event provides an opportunity for the broader Santa Clarita community to witness the skill, determination, and sportsmanship of Special Olympics athletes,” the release said.
Local residents are invited to participate by volunteering or attending as spectators to cheer on the athletes. Volunteers assist with event operations such as scorekeeping, team guidance and award ceremonies.
