A 27-year-old Newhall man was arrested on suspicion of multiple charges on Sunday — and was arrested again shortly after his initial release, according to an official with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

Deputies were patrolling the area of 15th Street and Chestnut Street near Walnut Street around 1 a.m. Sunday when they saw a man who was walking unsteadily and had an open bottle of alcohol, said Shirley Miller, spokeswoman for the station, during a phone interview on Monday.

Miller said that deputies contacted the man regarding the violation of the open alcohol bottle and he appeared to be under the influence. Deputies found out that he also had a misdemeanor warrant that was trespassing-related, she added.

Deputies arrested the man on suspicion of being under the influence in public, and while they searched him, they found he had a knife on him, Miller said.

While being transported to the station, the man was uncooperative and began kicking the windows – ultimately damaging the patrol car, Miller said. He was then arrested on suspicion of vandalism as well.

Miller said he was released around 12 p.m. Sunday but could not confirm the exact time.

She said the suspect then began throwing rocks while in the parking lot and damaged a patrol car’s headlight and vandalized a camera as well.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of resisting arrest, assaulting a peace officer, and vandalism as well, according to Miller.

He remains in custody as of the publication of this story and is being held in lieu of $70,000 bail, according to Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department inmate logs.
