Question: Hi Robert. This is our first home with a pool, and we’ve been outside utilizing it daily since we moved in in May. Once the weather turned blistering hot, we’ve had issues with the decking around the pool being too hot for our littles. They don’t want to wear water shoes all of the time while swimming but getting in and out with bare feet seems to be impossible with the direct sun on the decking. Is there anything that can be done to cool the deck?

Answer: Rich, yes, there are products out there that can reduce the surface temperature to a more manageable level. There are several available online and at big box stores as well as pool supply. Do your homework on the products themselves, as well as the installation methods. Following manufacturers’ instructions precisely will be of utmost importance for adhesion and longevity.

It will likely take some time based on instructions as well as the amount of decking needing coverage, so this may be something to wait and do at the end of the swimming season, depending on your personal choice. Once this is applied and cured, you’ll see a big difference in the comfort level for your kiddos. Best of luck.
