Two men were arrested at gunpoint in Castaic Monday afternoon after local sheriff’s deputies spotted a car wanted in connection with a carjacking, a sergeant with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station said.

The arrest happened in the parking lot at Carl’s Jr. restaurant on Castaic Road south of Parker Road, shortly before 4 p.m. after deputies spotted a white Honda Civic bearing the license plate of a car stolen in a carjacking, Sgt. Chris Maurici told The Signal Monday.

“This was a car reportedly taken during a carjacking,” he said.

At one minute before 4 p.m., a deputy advised his dispatcher that he was detaining the stolen car’s motorist at gunpoint.

The deputy was advised by his dispatcher that two men wanted in connection with the carjacking had been armed with a handgun and that one of the suspects wore a blue bandana, Maurici said.

“When the car was stolen, the suspects wanted in that carjacking were described as armed,” he said.

No shots were fired and no one was hurt during the arrest.

When told about the carjackers being armed, the arresting deputy asked for help in clearing the area around the arrest, expressing concern for several people in the parking lot.

At least four other deputies, including at least one deputy with the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department’s Parks Bureau responded to the assistance call.

At two minutes after 4 p.m., the deputy “extracted” a passenger in the car.

Two men were taken into custody.

Deputies were initially called to the Carl’s Jr. parking lot at 3:36 p.m. for reports of a dog seen locked in a car and panting due to the heat.

When asked about the initial call about the dog, and about deputies being in the area, Maurici said: “This was the result of good observational police work.”

Maurici said he did not have details as to where the carjacking took place.
