A Ventura County firefighter and Santa Clarita resident was killed in a rollover crash early Wednesday morning near Lompoc, according to officials.

The Ventura County Fire Department identified the firefighter as 38-year-old fire engineer Ryan Osler.  Osler worked at Station No. 42 in Moorpark and lived with his family in Santa Clarita.

According to a report from the California Highway Patrol, a water tender truck was traveling westbound on State Route 246 at 6:20 a.m.  The truck approached a roundabout at Purisima Road and hit a curb, which caused the fire truck to rollover.

Osler was a passenger of the truck and sustained fatal injuries during the crash.  The driver of the crash was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries, the report read.

The two firefighters were helping fight the Canyon Fire that began in a remote area near Vandenberg Air Force Base Sunday.  Osler was one of more than 1,000 firefighters fighting the flames.

Osler was with the fire department for 18 years.  He is survived by his wife and two children.

“Anne and I were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Fire Engineer Ryan Osler, a man who dedicated his life to protecting his fellow Californians,” Gov. Jerry Brown said in a statement.  “This tragedy reminds us of the dangers firefighters face every day.  We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends and many colleagues who are mourning this loss.”

The California Capitol flags were flown at half-staff in Osler’s honor.
