Walk to End Alzheimer’s
On Saturday, October 8, there will be a walk to raise funds for Alzheimer’s research. “Walk to End Alzheimer’s” will be held at Bridgeport Park in Valencia at 7:30 a.m.
My beautiful mother suffered from Alzheimer’s. It was so hard seeing her mentally fade away and knowing that there is no cure and there is no way to stop it. The look in her eyes when she could not remember something or someone, was very painful. Mom knew something was wrong. She would point to her head, and start crying. She tried to explain what it was that she was feeling, but could not find the words and was unable to express herself. During brief moments of clarity she would say, “Something is wrong with me.”
I had a dear friend, Marjorie, who suffered from ALS or ‘Lou Gehrig’s Disease.’ Watching Marjorie’s disease progress was just as difficult. Although my mother’s mind was disappearing due to Alzheimer’s, mom’s body was still strong, prior to her stroke anyway. In contrast to Marjorie’s body which withered away very rapidly, while her mind remained active and aware. I’m not sure which disease is worse.
