Heather Warrick was in her 20s when she had her battle with cancer. She was going through her seventh bout then and fought for around 13 years before she passed away.
This is the person Kathleen Pavard thinks about when she organized the American Cancer Society 2016 Annual Relay for Life Holiday Boutique for the eighth year at Santa Clarita United Methodist Church on Saturday.
“We continue to fight back for her,” said Pavard. “That inspired me.”
Pavard, the special events chair for Relay for Life, does not just organize the boutique every year. She was one of 28 vendors selling mostly homemade crafts for attendees to check out.
She has sold gift tags and handcrafted cards every year since the event’s inception and donates all her proceeds to the American Cancer Society. She does not even charge for the supplies required to make them.
“I like to say I donate 150 percent,” said Pavard.
These are the kind of people that Nancy Coulter, Warrick’s mother, is incredibly grateful for. Her daughter found the American Cancer Society a safe and secure place when she was going through her battle with cancer and Coulter has volunteered over 25 years with the organization.
“She probably looking down from above being very pleased about what’s going on,” said Coulter.
“Someone can come in that’s lost their hair from treatment…and they can get a brand new wig.”
“All they have to do is come into the office.”
Pavard expects to net around $2,500 from the event, all of which will go towards the organization’s mission: to find a cure for cancer.
