An inmate was stabbed at the Pitchess Detention Center’s North County Correctional Facility Tuesday morning during a brawl involving inmates.

Shortly before 8:20 a.m., a fight involving several inmates broke out in the facility, Nicole Nishida, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.

“When the inmates were receiving medical care it was discovered that one inmate had puncture wounds,” she said. “He is being treated and evaluated for possible stab wounds.”

The inmate was taken to the hospital.

The stabbing was reported to the Los Angeles County Fire Department at 9:20 a.m., Fire Department spokeswoman Vanessa Lozano told The Signal.

Paramedics were dispatched and arrived at the jail on The Old Road at Biscailuz Drive in Castaic by 9:31 a.m., she said.

“This was for a stabbing victim, a male adult,” she said. “One patient was transported to a local area trauma center.”

A Los Angeles County Sheriff Department deputy at the North County Correctional Facility said he could not confirm reports that an inmate had been stabbed.

Emergency response crews remained at the jail for almost an hour.
