Amid a sea of red and blue, eighth grade students at Rio Norte Junior High School watched as their classmates passed the football and ran down the field.

The annual Turkey Bowl football game has been a tradition for the junior high school since it opened its doors in 2003.

According to Rio Norte Principal Vincent Ferry, those wishing to compete in the game must try out for the two teams and attend practices for three weeks.

Wednesday’s game faced off the red and blue teams.  The eighth grade class is split evenly to support either team during the day with red or blue outfits and sideline cheers.

“This was a very exciting game,” Ferry said.  “The blue team got out to a big lead and the game ended with a final score of 24-12.”

The game is a special privilege reserved for eighth graders before the Thanksgiving break.

“It really shows sportsmanship,” Ferry said.  “It’s a fun, spirited game and this year was no different.”
