Love and support for the little girl who died on her 9th birthday last week continue to grow as fundraisers find themselves within $500 from the goal set to cover funeral costs.

At least $9,500 has been raised on a website set up to accept donations for the family of 9-year-old Anakaren Galvan, as of mid-afternoon Tuesday.

Anakaren was struck and killed by a car shortly after 7 p.m. Oct. 24 after she stepped into traffic near the intersection of Orchard Village and Wiley Canyon roads in Newhall, Sgt. Brian Hudson of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station said at the time of accident.

Several people have contacted The Signal wanting to know if the girl was running or walking at the time of the fatal accident.

The answer, according to one motorist stopped at the intersection of Orchard Village and Wiley at the time of the collision, the answer is neither.

“Ana and her mother were skipping along – from the body language, they seemed happy,” the woman said.

Anakaren, who was born on Oct. 24, 2007, died on Oct. 24, 2016, her 9th birthday.

“The girl was ahead of her mother moving faster but she was not running. She was skipping.  The mother was skipping too but slower,” the woman said.

“They seemed happy almost carefree. When I learned that it was her birthday and she was celebrating, it made perfect sense,” she said, noting she shared what she saw with detectives of  the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station who are investigating

“It is hard to fathom such a thing happening,” she said.

Funds being raised by friends of the Galvan family say the money is desperately needed to cover funeral costs.

“The family really needs help paying for the funeral services,” close family friend, Veronique Munro, wrote to the Signal in an email. “If you could share it as a follow up we would greatly appreciate it.”
