Thieves stole two empty US Postal Service mail trucks in Acton early Monday morning.
“We’re treating it as a burglary,” Stacie Crane, spokeswoman for the US Postal Inspection Service, told The Signal Monday.
“We had two vehicles stolen but they were empty,” she said. “And, we did recover them.”
Deputies with the Palmdale Sheriff’s Station began pursuing the trucks once they were spotted, Crane said.
They found both trucks abandoned, one of them abandoned following a minor traffic collision.
Asked if the thieves were after the vehicles, mail or both, Crane said: “It’s hard to say. We can’t tell exactly what they were looking for.
“We’re still treating it as a crime,” she said.
The burglary comes on the heels of several seasonal thefts relating to stolen mail, packages stolen from doorsteps, vandalized mailboxes and stolen identities.
