A Saugus woman was sentenced to 60 days in jail Friday after she pleaded no contest to vehicular manslaughter in the death of a 53-year-old Santa Clarita Valley man.
Nelly Rose Babinskidhont, 50, appeared Friday at the Santa Clarita Courthouse where she entered her plea of no contest to one misdemeanor count of vehicular manslaughter, Ricardo Santiago, spokesman for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office told The Signal Friday afternoon.
“She was sentenced to 60 days in jail, imposition of suspended license, three years summary probation and 450 hours of community service,” Santiago said.
Babinskidhont was arrested May 4 on suspicion of misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence in the death of Leo Castillo of Santa Clarita, CHP Officer Josh Greengard said at the time of her arrest.
She turned herself in at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, where she was jailed with bail set at $25,000, arrest documents show.
Castillo was killed on the morning of June 17, 2015, when he was hit by a vehicle as he turned left from Sand Canyon Road onto Sierra Highway while riding his 2006 Yamaha FZ1 motorcycle in Canyon Country, according to a report filed at the time by CHP Officer Froilan Bebita.
The driver of a 2015 Chevrolet 2500 heavy duty pickup truck, identified at the time as a 49-year-old woman, was traveling northbound on Sierra Highway at about 45 miles per hour, Bebita wrote.
The collision propelled the pickup truck and Castillo’s motorcycle into another pickup stopped in the left-turn lane on southbound Sierra Highway, the investigator said at the time of the crash.
The driver of the Ford 250 pickup was identified only as a 38-year-old man.
Castillo was pronounced dead at the scene. The drivers of each pickup truck suffered moderate injuries, Bebita wrote in his report.
